Typical Guatemalan Dishes Served Right at La Fonda de La Calle Real Restaurant

Back in November La Fonda de la Calle Real held it’s annual Carrera de Charolas, which was, as always, a smash hit. Now it’s time to discuss why La Fonda de la Calle RealLaFondaRestaurant Restaurant is a smash hit as well.

If you’ve spent much time in Guatemala, you’ll know that there is a wide variety of restaurants to choose from. In Antigua you can get anything from Chinese to Mexican, and finding authentic Guatemalan fare can actually be a little tricky.

That is where La Fonda comes into play. There are actually a number of different establishments in Antigua alone, the original located on Avenida 5 Norte, No.5, between the Central Plaza an the famous yellow arch. The restaurant has is actually an old two story house, and the upstairs has several small balconies that open up to overlook the streets below.

Be brave when you open up the menu, and if you are unsure what to try then ask your waiter. To those who want a sampling of Guatemala’s typical foods the Comal de Recados is a good choice. It is a sampling of three traditional Guatemalan dishes: Kak’Ik, a turkey soup, Pepian, chicken in spicy tomato sauce, and a stew with pork and liver in brown gravy. (Definitely not a vegetarian meal, although there are vegetarian options on the menu.) That meal costs under 10 dollars and is incredibly filling.

My favorite, and possibly the most popular dish at La Fonda, is Caldo Real. The dish is served in a large bowl/cup and combines chicken breast and rice in broth served with an array of spices: cilantro, oregano, chili powder, fresh sweet onions and lemon wedges. They also have a very extensive wine list.

La Fonda de la Calle Real gets so many rave reviews from visitors and locals that it has come to be a “must visit” location for many planning a trip to Antigua. Trust this Gringo, you will not be disappointed.

Dress ranges from casual to dressy and meals are less than 10 dollars on average.

The original La Fonda (on 5a Avenida Norte, No.5) is open for breakfast from 7 am to 10 am, and serves lunch, appetizers and dinner from 12 pm – 10 pm. Tel: (502) 832–2696

La Fonda de “A La Vuelta,” which is the newer establishment, is located at 3a Calle Poniente No. 7, Tel: (502) 832–0507 and serves lunch, appetizers, and dinner from 12 pm– 10 pm.

Come on a Friday or Saturday night or a Sunday afternoon to enjoy live music: Latin guitars and two typical South American instruments, the charango and the kena.
